Year 1 Long Term Overview 2025 26
Important dates and information: P.E. Wednesdays and Fridays
English
In English, this term, we will be focusing on traditional and fairy tales, as well as instructional writing later in the term. We will focus on using our phonic knowledge for spelling and to develop and progress our sentence writing. We will continue to focus on forming our letters correctly and placing them on the line. We will be focusing on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, as well as question marks and exclamation marks.
Maths
In Maths, we will be following White Rose Maths. We are looking at numbers 1-20, focusing on place value and addition and subtraction within 20. We are trying to build an in-depth knowledge of number and make them really secure as this will help them further up the school. Our number bonds to and within 10 are a very important foundation for building our maths skills and we are working on consolidating these and applying them to numbers to 20.
Science
Our science topic will be everyday materials. We will be focusing on the vocabulary used to describe different types of materials as well as their properties and uses.
Foundation subjects:
In History, we will be focusing on our ‘Local area – Changes over time’ We will be looking at how our houses have changed over time as well as our towns and villages.
In R.E. we will be asking ‘Why is Jesus special to Christians?’
Our key questions this term are ‘What do we know about Jesus?’ and ‘Why did Jesus care for others’
In DT we will be joining materials to create our own puppets.
In Music, we are learning about rhythm and song. We will be learning from a specialist music teacher this term and hopefully experimenting with some instruments too.
Our topic in PSHE will be ‘Keeping Safe’ looking at who can help us keep safe and how we can look after ourselves too.
In P.E. this term, we will be focusing on gymnastics. We will be developing basic gymnastic actions on the floor and using low apparatus. Basic skills of jumping, rolling, balancing and travelling to create a basic sequence of moves. All children will require a full P.E. consisting of a top based on their team colour, a pair of black shorts or leggings and a pair of trainers/sand shoes for this half term
The children will have access to areas of provision around the classroom in order to encourage independent learning and exploring.
How you can help your child:
We believe that any work you do at home with your child should be simple and purposeful. We would ask you to support your child in the following:
Reading- Reading any texts with your child will help improve their fluency and knowledge. We will send home a reading book assessed at their current reading level.
Number skills- Basic number skills are a great way to help improve your child’s confidence in maths. We would ask that you support them to play Numbots as this will really help their basic skills. White Rose Maths 1 minute maths app is also a great free resource that can help children be secure with subitizing and number bonds which form the building blocks for all maths as they progress through school.
Keeping homework fun helps to engage your child and not add any pressure to home life.
If there is anything we can support, you with then please let us know
Thanks
Jacqui and Hayley
