School Admissions

School Admissions

Here at The Grove Primary School, we follow the Durham County Council Admissions Policy. All parents must apply directly to the Local Authority for admission into the Reception Class and any in-year transfers. Please visit the Durham County Council website for information regarding the School Admission Process and Primary School Admissions. To appeal against an admission decision visit: School Admissions Appeals.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Applying for a school place if your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan or a Statement of SEN

Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (or Statement of Special Education Needs) follow a different admission and transfer process for a new school. Please continue to complete Durham County Council’s parental preference form, as part of the admission process to a new school. You continue to have a right to request a particular school and this will be considered alongside the information that we have about your child’s special educational needs. The information would have been provided as part of the Education, Health and Care assessment or following the review meeting

If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.

EYFS Admissions

Here at The Grove Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Unit is for children ages 3 – 5 years old. We offer an AM and PM nursery session each session lasts for 3 hours per day, and children will be expected to attend all 5 sessions per week. We also offer 30 Hours provision for eligible children. If you would like to register your child’s name on the nursery waiting list, you can do the following things:

  • Contact the school by telephone, letter or visit. This can be done at the beginning of September after your child’s second birthday.
  • You will be asked to complete and sign an application form (an application form can be accessed and downloaded from our Nursery Class Page) which can be returned to nurseryadmissions@thegroveprimaryschool.co.uk.  Alternatively, you can contact our School Office on 01207 502938 if you require a paper copy.
  • Children will be given available places from the term after the age of three. The child’s birth certificate is required at this time.

If there are more applications than places, pupils are allocated a place in accordance with Durham County Council’s Admission Policy – with priority given to children in need than to those with previous experience of nursery; according to date of entry to primary school; the date of application and residence with the authority.

You can use the following form to apply for a place Nursery-Application-form

Transition to Secondary School

Most children from The Grove Primary School move up to the local secondary school, Consett Academy. In Year 6, children will take part on a number of visits to Consett Academy, throughout the school year, as part of the transition process. Teachers and staff from Consett Academy will also visit our Year 6 children in school to answer any questions they may have. Children and parents will also be invited along to a number of open events held throughout the year organised by Consett Academy. More information about these events will be sent home with your child as and when necessary. If you have any questions about the transition process, please do get in contact with us in school and we will do our best to assist.

To apply for a secondary school place for your child please visit the Durham County Council Secondary School Admissions Website for more information.
