What we are learning in Year 2

Year 2 Long Term Overview 2025 26

This term we will be learning living things and thinking about this in our science work but also in our literacy work!
Important dates and information

P.E. days are Monday and Thursday and we would ask that children bring their P.E. kits in at the start of the term. We will then get changed in the class this year.

Literacy

In Literacy this term, we will be Mammoth a story all about a Woolly Mammoth who wakes up in New York City!

We will then read a story called Dear Greenpeace about protecting animals.

Later on, we will be making some non-fiction work on animals linked to our Science work.

We will then read the story Dear Greenpeace and write some letters based on the animals in the story.

Numeracy

In school, we follow White Rose Maths. This term we will cover Place value, Addition and subtraction and doubling and halving. We will work on basic skills and start to look at times tables 2,5 and 10.

In Science our topics this term are:

This term we will be looking at living things and their habitats. We will look at vertebrates and invertebrates. We will also look at local trees, common birds and garden flowers.

Foundation subjects

In Geography, we will find out what is wonderful in our world!

In History, we will be finding out why places are special.

In Computing, we will be learning about computer systems.

In Art, we will be looking at the Artist Andy Goldsworthy.

In DT, we will be creating and making ‘Pouches’

In PSHE, we will think about Me and My Relationships and then Valuing differences.

In R.E. we will be thinking about why the bible is important to Christians.

How you can help your child…

We believe that any work you do at home with your child should be simple and purposeful. We would ask you to support you child in the following:

Reading– Reading any texts with your child will help improve their fluency and knowledge. We will send home a reading book assessed at their current reading level. We will send home a book for pleasure that can be enjoyed with your child.

Number skills– Basic number skills are a great way to help improve your child’s confidence in math. We would ask that you support them to play Numbots/ Timetable Rockstars as this will really help their basic skills. Could you also use any spare time, i.e. when you are walking or on car journey’s, to chant times tables and ask your child questions related to times tables. In Year two children should know their 2’s,5’s and 10’s times tables. These skills will support them in all areas of numeracy.

Spellings– Each week the children will learn a new spelling rule. You could support your child with understanding these rules by helping them to practice them. You could do the look/cover/ write/ check method or even play games such as letter scramble (mix all the letters up and then put in the correct order) or hangman. Please use the spelling sheets on Tapestry each week to practice the relevant ones linked to the week’s work.

Keeping homework fun helps to engage your child and not add any pressure to home life.

If there is anything we can support you with, then please let us know.

Thanks

Carly and Charlotte

Thank you!
