At The Grove Primary School, we aim to give our children a rich and varied curriculum. A high-quality Design Technology education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Design Technology. They should also know how DT and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.’ National Curriculum.
At The Grove Primary School, we will give children the opportunity to develop skills from other curriculum areas such as mathematics, science, computing, art and literacy. The vibrant and varied curriculum ensures that pupils know how to take educated risk becoming resourceful, innovate, enterprising and capable citizens.
Design and technology across the school
DT in EYFS
Expressive arts and design is one of the seven areas of the early years foundation stage and is used to develop a child’s imagination, creativity and their ability to use media and materials. Children have continuous provision in early years so they have access throughout the day to a creative area which will change day to day and have many different media and materials for them to explore and create with.
DT is KS1
Following on from Early Years, KS1 also have continuous provision in their rooms which means they have access to a creative area. Throughout the day children will have creative freedom to design and make their own models and sculptures.
Alongside the continuous provision, in KS1 children follow the long-term plan which implements the Art national curriculum. As a school we follow the Design and Technology scheme from Kapow. we split our Art and DT over the term, therefore one-half term they will do art and the other half term they will do DT. They have 1 hour long directed DT lessons once a week.
DT in KS2
Children across KS2 have a 1 hour long directed DT lessons once a week. They follow the long-term plan taken from the scheme, Kapow. Design and technology is the same across KS1 and KS2, therefore one-half term they will do art and the other half term they will do DT.
