Art and Design
At The Grove Primary School, we aim to give children the opportunity to explore Art and Design.
We don’t just teach them how to hold a paint brush or cut a piece of paper, we give them the chance to really explore using different materials, resources and equipment. Art is such an amazing subject as there is no right or wrong answer. It is simply a way to express yourself. We encourage children to be as free and experimental as they choose to be.
We look at a varied range of Artists across the Years ranging from famous artist you would have heard of such as Van Gogh to other abstract artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Victor Nunes.
Check out Victor Nunes! He can produce some amazing art just from an old banana.
We have access to a wide range of materials to get creative from paint to pastels to clay and Modroc. There is always lots of fun to be had with Art and Design. We apologise in advance for the mess… Is it even art if you are not a little bit messy?!
We were even lucky enough to have our own Grove Primary School Art Gallery 2019 in school and our grown ups were able to visit. It was amazing! Our next one is coming in Spring 2023!
Each term we will be holding an Artist week, where each class will investigate various artists, designers, craftspeople and architects. At the end of Artist week, we will be holding an Art gallery to show off what we have learnt through the week.
Art in EYFS
Expressive arts and design is one of the seven areas of the early years foundation stage and is used to develop a child’s imagination, creativity and their ability to use media and materials. Children have continuous provision in early years so they have access throughout the day to a creative area which will change day to day and have many different media and materials for them to explore and create with. Alongside this, children have directed art lessons where they will learn about artist and learn to enhance their artistic skills.
Art is KS1
Following on from Early Years, KS1 also have continuous provision in their rooms which means they have access to a creative area. Throughout the day children will have creative freedom to design and make their own art. Alongside the continuous provision, in KS1 children follow the long-term plan which implements the Art national curriculum. They have 1 hour long directed art lessons once a week.
we split our Art and DT over the term, therefore one-half term they will do art and the other half term they will do DT.
Art in KS2
Children across KS2 have hour long directed art lessons once a week. They follow the long-term plan which covers a wide range of artistic skills to give the children a wide range of experiences.
Design and technology is the same across KS1 and KS2, therefore one-half term they will do art and the other half term they will do DT.
At the end of every term we hold an artist week where children learn about different artists, craftspeople, designers and architects. After the week we hold an Art gallery for parents so they are able to see what we have created over the week. This runs for the whole school from Nursery all the way to Year 6.
